Abstract

Abstract: The intangible cultural heritage associated with Yunnan’s unique clay or stone-made divine animals – clay cats – has gone through a transformation process, evolving from local beliefs to the protection of intangible cultural heritage, from practical functions to creative products that have become highly popular cultural symbols with strong vitality. This article examines four different forms of “cultural transformation” of clay cats: from history to the present, from totems to folk customs, from outdoor use to indoor use, and from traditional craftsmanship to creative products. By preserving the cultural core aspects of these animals (protection and bringing good fortune), and through systematic innovation in function, aesthetics, and industry, modern cultural symbols of clay cats have been created through the efforts of generations of people who care for them. This approach offers a sustainable path for the transmission of intangible cultural heritage that is characteristic of Yunnan.
