Abstract

The critique of social acceleration and the theory of communicative action are both projects of modernity diagnosis within the Frankfurt School, and their fundamental divergence lies in temporality. The theory of communicative action is structurally a timeless theory: communicative rationality presupposes the infinite argumentation of validity claims, and neither the lifeworld nor the colonization thesis incorporates temporal conditions into its diagnostic framework. Rosa, by contrast, reconstructs the diagnostic program through an accelerated temporality; the threefold acceleration constitutes a dynamically stable closed circuit, and temporal structures replace communicative structures as the linchpin of pathology, such that "no time to talk" is logically prior to "the distortion of communication." The comparison shows that Rosa achieves an inheritance of Habermas's problematic through a translation into temporal terms, and an transcendence through a critique of its temporal blind spot, yet the norm of resonance, by virtue of its appeal to subjective feeling, faces the criticism of being "weak and inconclusive." The two constitute a critical relationship of "inheritance–displacement," whereby temporality becomes the key hinge for examining the contemporary evolution of critical theory.
